Tour The Pearl, The delicacy

In touring places, you get a privileged of learning a lot of new things allover the world, today, am sharing with you a story written by a one Sankara Baruhanga Magezi, a Mbarara University Guild presidential aspirant. He talks about one of the best delicacies that you will find in the pearl of Africa when you finally make that good decision to come and feel the pearl.

I grew up from KIGEZI region, located in south western Uganda bordering Rwanda, DRC and Burundi. My love for KIGEZI will never die. No wonder I am a mukiga 99% but most importantly am Ugandan. Our famous drink is called “bushera”Usually sipped from enkyeeka (a small gourd) or a half litre mug (usually called gamma), obushera has for long been the Bakiga’s favorite thirst quencher.I implore readers to let us in on their local beverages. In High school when our English teacher gave us an assignment about writing on our local foods, the so called Kampala born looked down on us writing about cassava, sweet potato, yam and they could take none of it. Instead they wrote about pizzas, muchomo, Sandwiches etc. to the amusement of everyone. This was especially the girls and boys in showbiz.Terraces that run round the steep hills in KIGEZI reveal a scenery that is irresistibly charming, with small but dependable fields of sorghum, millet and Irish potatoes. Gentle breezes always comfort the farmers as they wait patiently for the next harvest. The winding roads from one hill to the next make a trip to Kigezi a spectacular one. I urge you to spend a weekend in kabale, you will love it, it’s mwaaaa….One cannot help but wonder why its inhabitants, the Bakiga are so keen on refilling their gourds with bushera (a drink made out of millet or sorghum flour). A new visitor in this area might leave with the impression that it is mandatory here for every shop keeper to stock the drink.Bushera has proved so magical in the past that most rural Bakiga thought of it as medicine. This is indeed true to some extent – some information obtained from Kisiizi Hospital where my auntie is a nurse, reveals that the population of Kigezi has a low level of constipation complaints compared to the rest of Uganda thanks to regular sips of bushera. The Bakiga will need no specific time, agenda, environment or weather to drink the stuff. Any time is Bushera time. The ability to drink bushera at any time of the day makes the Bakiga’s working hours very flexible and easily stretched into an entire day. A sip of bushera while munching on some Irish potatoes prepared the night before (amahoro g’emondi) can keep one going for a while longer. Bakiga are arguably the hardest working tribe in Uganda courtesy of bushera.THE MAKING OF BUSHERAThere are two ways of making obushera butooko. In one, millet flour is used and the in the other, sorghum flour is used but for both, water is boiled first. A mixture of flour and cold water that was boiled and cooled earlier is thoroughly mixed to form a thick slurry in a bowl. Boiling water is then added, stirring rapidly to produce a smooth enkoomba (porridge). Any solid/non-jelly pieces of millet/sorghum meal that form in the porridge are removed. After the porridge cools, ekyimeera (yeast) is added and the bowl covered for a night. After about twelve hours, bushera can then be stirred and is ready to drink. This is one healthy drink that the cook prepares with a special attachment, counting on it to take him/her into the next day.As you can all witness, There is no mention of artificial sweeteners, or sugar in the entire procedure. However, the non-Bakiga who drink bushera are often quick to bet that sugar is one of the ingredients. To tell the truth, it is very difficult to believe that no sugar was added and for that reason most diabetic and high blood pressure patients tend to avoid this wonderful beverage.BUSHERA EXPANDS ITS COVERAGE Bushera has grown in popularity even among other tribes besides the Bakiga in Uganda, Martha, is a Canadian born in Bududa but she always has millet flour in her house for that purpose.Baganda ladies have lately also joined the band wagon of bushera drinking. They highly link Bushera to having sexual prowess through unusually high level of lubrication during intercourse. So ladies come on, join the league of bushera drinkers to make happy and fulfilling marriages and sexual life. However unscrupulous traders who aim at profit maximization have been found to use dirty water, exposing unsuspecting customers to illnesses like typhoid. Therefore you may have to buy from trusted sellers or home preparation is paramount.Bushera is still a vital part of my way of life even though I am in a foreign country, thousands of nautical miles away from KIGEZI –I wish you all the best in preparing a gamma or enkyeeka of bushera. Enjoy while it lasts. Visit us in kabale for 1st hand experience.
This is one of the most common drinks in Uganda that you can not just find any where else just like that, its special n its own way and something that you should taste from the source by yourself. Tour the Pearl, Tour Greatness. We look forward to recieving you as you travel to the Pearl of Africa.

Tour The Pearl, Cities

Tour the Pearl, Cities

Travel is one of the most beautiful and enjoyable things that a human brain always loves doing. Research has shown that the mo

re adventurous you are in terms of visiting new places, the more sharper your brain becomes as far as problem solving is concerned. There are very many things that make traveling so well, first of all, people across the world all have different and diverse cultures.

It is so fun and adventurous to explore a new culture from another part of the country or the world every time you travel around. Then the food that is available in different parts of the world, the beautiful weather that differs from point to point, area to area. All those make travelling adventurous and sweet.

For the case of this blog, am going to share with you some very beautiful yet little known places that have some of the most beautiful features that the world has ever heard of. Am going to share with you the adventures and tour sites, cities and all the beautiful things that will make you want to come and visit the place at least more than twice in your entire life time.

The place I want to share with you in this case is a small country that goes by the name of Uganda. Because of her uniqueness, she was nicknamed the pearl of Africa, a name she deserves for sure because of the diversity of her natural resources and beautiful nature.

To start with, as you prepare yourself to come and visit this beautiful country, I would like to give you a small introduction; you may call it a hint on the country’s major cities. This is a developing country, so you don’t expect her cities to be as developed as New York, No, but they are beautiful and unique in their own way. You can only find out about this when you come over and you spend a day or two in them.

Uganda’s major city, which some of you call the capital city goes by the name of Kampala.

partial view of Kampala City
This city is located in the central region of the country, the region that is commonly referred to as the Buganda region because of its association with the traditional Buganda kingdom. In the 1950’s, this great and beautiful city used to cover the seven traditional hills of Kampala, but because of the diversity in both business and population growth, this city has expanded to as far as the neighboring districts of Mukono, Wakiso and Entebbe( which is also one of the beautiful urban areas. It also houses the International airport of Entebbe).

There are a lot of activities that take place in Kampala ranging from very big businesses, manufacturing, entertainment and so much more. As a matter of fact, the saying that Kampala people never sleep is right, you can chose either to sleep or enjoy the night in the many night entertainment spots all over the city.

The transport system in Kampala is not the best though, but with the introduction of modern transport services like Uber and friendship taxi, there is absolutely nothing to worry about, your transport needs can be taken care of as you wish.

Otherwise, for purposes of adventure, you can as well use the most common taxi service in the city; which is very cheap in terms of costs. For example, with just 1000 Uganda shillings, you can get a taxi from the city center to places like Ntinda, Kansanga and kawempe, which are in the city outskirts. You can also opt for the quickest means, which is referred to as BodaBoda in most African states. This is basically grabbing a motor bike to your destination. This is a little bit expensive though.

Mbarara City
The other city which is considered by many as the second largest city in the Country goes by the names of Mbarara. This place is located close to the southwest of this nation and it’s in the center of a region that is locally referred to as the Ankole region. This city is more so like the capital city, only that is a bit smaller in geographical size and location.

The people in this city and area are very warm and welcoming, an attribute that is linked with the hospitality of the Banyankore sub tribe which forms the majority of the population in this particular area. Transport in this area is not as difficult as it is in the city; there is relatively low traffic jam. The most common mode of transport in this area is by BodaBoda, which I relatively cheaper compared to their colleagues in Kampala.

Jinja city
The third largest city in Uganda is presumed to be Jinja, a town that has existed since the colonial times. This city was Uganda’s industrial city in the 1960’s, I don’t know what happened but it’s not that any more. Well, this is one of the most organized cities with straight lanes, English style, and a thing that is not common in most African cities. There is one most important feature that this city possesses; it houses the source of the longest river in Africa, River Nile to be specific. This leaves it with a lot of tourist sites to admire. This city is located in a region that is commonly referred to as the Busoga region locally.

With that pretty brief introduction, allow me stop here for tonight as we look forward to having an enjoyable tour across the pearl of Africa.
Kind regards.
